COMING OUT AND THE NEED TO TELL

Although wearing the mask becomes second nature, it continues to exact a heavy price. The duplicity is never wanted, is always estranging, and, in many cases, the weight ultimately becomes too heavy to bear. The urge persists for honesty and congruency, the longing to be known and accepted for who they believe they truly are. Gay men frequently arrive at a point in their lives when they determine they can no longer bear the burden of the mask.

The press from within to be more accurately understood and to better belong are factors that encourage individuals to “come out.” These men desire congruency, and it is their longing for honesty that drives them to acknowledge their homosexual inclinations. The fact of their draw to those of their own gender is then quietly shared with a few or grandly and broadly announced, “I’m gay.”
